The crystal guide, which stone is right for you and when.

The crystal guide, which stone is right for you and when.

This guide started as a handout at crystal parties. Women kept asking the same question: which stone do I need and when? So I wrote it down.

It covers 15 stones: what each one does energetically, when to reach for it, which emotional states it helps, and how to work with it practically. Not the Instagram version of crystal healing. The version that actually helps.

The question itself is the interesting part. Nobody asks which stone is best. They ask which one they need, and they usually already have a sense of the answer before I say anything. The guide exists to give that sense some language.

In crystal tradition, Moonstone is for trusting your own knowing. Rose Quartz for when you have been hard on yourself. Clear Quartz for mental clarity. Black Tourmaline for grounding and protection. Smoky Quartz for when your mind is running faster than your body. Tiger Eye for courage when you need to act.

That is 6 of the 15, and it is enough to show you the shape of it. Each one is matched to a state rather than to a goal. Not what you want to achieve. What is going on with you this week.

Which is why the usual way of choosing goes wrong. Most people choose by looking, and they come home with the prettiest thing on the table. There is nothing wrong with that, and it is how most of us start, but a stone chosen because it is beautiful tends to end up on a shelf being beautiful.

The second mistake is buying a lot of them at once. 11 stones in a dish on the windowsill is a collection, and a collection is a different relationship from a practice. You cannot have a practice with 11 things.

So the honest advice is 1 stone. Chosen for the week you are actually having, not for the person you are planning to become.

If you are not sure which week you are having, the quickest way to tell is to ask where it sits in your body. Chest and throat, tight, too much to do: you want something settling. Head, racing, 4 tabs open at 11 at night: something clarifying. Flat, heavy, no edges: something grounding. You do not need to be precise. You need to be approximately honest.

Then do the dull practical thing, which is keep it where you will touch it. A pocket, or on the desk by your hand, or on the bedside table. Not in a drawer, not in the lovely box it came in. A stone you have to go and find is a stone you will not use.

How to work with it is simpler than most people expect. You hold it. That is most of it. When you notice the state it is matched to turning up, you put your hand round it for a minute, and the holding gives you somewhere to put your attention that is not the thing bothering you. In crystal tradition it is also cleaned from time to time, under running water or left out overnight, and you will find a dozen variations on that depending on who taught whom.

And here is the part I would rather say plainly than let anybody discover with a credit card. A stone is not going to do it for you. It does not fix the week. What it does, reliably, is interrupt you. You reach into your pocket and your hand finds something cool and solid, and for a second you are in the room rather than 3 hours into a conversation that has not happened yet.

That interruption is not a small thing. Most of what keeps a difficult state running is the fact that nothing stops it. But it is an interruption, not a cure, and anybody selling it as more than that is selling something else.

Which means the sceptic's version of all this is entirely available and loses nothing. If none of the energetic language appeals to you, use the stone as an object with a decision attached. You picked it for a reason. Every time you touch it, you are reminded of the reason. People have used rings, coins and worry beads in exactly this way for a very long time.

If you try it and nothing happens, that is also fine, and it is usually about the matching rather than the stone. The most common reason a stone sits unused is that it was chosen for a state the person was not actually in. Somebody buys something grounding because they feel they ought to be calmer, when what is really going on is that they are flat and need something that lifts.

And if you want to know which stone that is, that is what the whole guide is for.

It is a downloadable guide, and it is free if you come to a crystal party or a workshop.
