What a pendulum session actually involves, and why it works even if you're sceptical.

What a pendulum session actually involves, and why it works even if you're sceptical.

A pendulum is a divination tool that responds to the body's subtle energy. In practice, it accesses subconscious knowing, the responses your body holds that your conscious mind may be overriding.

That is the whole claim, and it is a smaller claim than people expect, so it is worth being plain about what is and is not being said.

The pendulum doesn't people-please. The pendulum has never once thought I'll just say yes to keep the peace. That's the whole point. It bypasses the part of you that manages, performs and accommodates, and goes straight to what you actually know underneath all of that.

The part that manages is the reason this tool exists at all. If a person could simply be asked a question and give the true answer, nobody would need an object on a chain to find it.

But most of the women who come for this have spent a very long time being extremely good at answering questions in the way that keeps the room comfortable. That skill does not switch itself off because the room is now just me.

So it is not a short cut past thinking. It is a short cut past managing.

What I use it for in sessions: belief mapping (identifying subconscious beliefs that are running counter to what the conscious mind says it wants), energy centre assessment, and decision clarity for women who are genuinely undecided and want access to a deeper knowing.

Those 3 are worth describing in ordinary words, because the names make them sound more technical than the hour actually is.

Belief mapping is finding the sentence underneath the problem. Somebody says she wants a thing, and means it, and nothing moves. Underneath there is usually a flat statement she has never said out loud, often about what sort of person she would be if she had it. Nothing shifts until that sentence is in the open, and it rarely arrives in conversation, because in conversation she can hear how it sounds.

Energy centre assessment is less mysterious than it reads. It is a way of going round the body asking where things have gathered, so that we are not working from where she thinks the problem is. Where she thinks it is and where it sits are frequently 2 different places.

Decision clarity is for the woman who has written the same list of pros and cons 4 times and keeps producing the same tie. A tie that will not break is almost never a shortage of information. There is usually something she already knows and has good reasons not to know.

How the hour actually goes: we start with whatever is going on for her, in her own words. Then small closed questions, and we watch what the body does with them. Then we stop and talk about what came up, because the answers are not the useful part. What she makes of them is.

It is not a magic oracle. It is a tool that works with what's already in your system, amplifying what's there rather than importing something from outside. The answers it surfaces are always yours. I'm just helping you hear them.

The sceptical question is the fair one and it has an honest answer. A pendulum moves because of very small movements in the hand. That is not a debunking and it does not trouble me in the slightest, because those small movements are coming from somewhere, and that somewhere is precisely what we are after.

What it does is take something already happening in the body and make it big enough to see. The body has been answering the whole time. The pendulum just gives it a swing.

Which also means it cannot tell you anything you are not already holding. It is not a forecast and it is not an authority. If you come wanting to be told what to do, this is the wrong hour and I would rather say so first.

The practical questions are worth answering too. You do not need to believe in it beforehand, and sceptical women tend to get more out of it rather than less, because they query everything that comes up instead of accepting it. You do not need to have a question ready. Most people arrive with a vague heaviness rather than a neat problem, and vague is a perfectly good place to start. And nothing is decided in the room. Whatever surfaces goes home with you and you do what you like with it.

What people try before anything like this is thinking harder. More research, another spreadsheet, one more conversation with a friend who is quietly bored of the subject.

Thinking harder is excellent for problems made of information, and this is not one of those. You cannot reason your way to a thing you are keeping from yourself, because the reasoning is being done by the one keeping it.

The second thing people try is asking somebody else to decide, usually by describing the situation in a way that makes the answer obvious. Everybody does it. It is not dishonest, it is just how a person asks for permission.

The third is waiting for certainty, which does not come, because certainty is what you get after a decision rather than before one.

It is also worth saying what the pendulum is not for, because that boundary is the thing that keeps it honest. It is not for questions about other people. It cannot tell you what somebody else is thinking, whether they will come back, or what they meant. It only reaches what is in your own system, and the moment it is pointed at somebody else it has stopped being a tool and started being a comfort.

What to notice, if you do have one of these hours, is the question that makes you want to change the subject. That is the one.

And notice afterwards how long the answer stays with you. The ones that were already yours stay. The ones that were not fade by Friday, which is its own useful piece of information.

It is the most requested single session I offer.
