The question I get asked more than any other at trunk shows and markets is: but how do I actually use them?
Not the healing properties. Not the chakra alignment chart. Just: what do I do with this stone once I've bought it?
It is a better question than it sounds, and the reason nobody answers it is that the honest answer is almost embarrassingly small.
You hold it. That's it. Not with expectation. Not with a 17 step ritual. You hold it with intention. For 30 seconds. Before a difficult meeting. During a moment when everything feels like too much. When you need to come back to yourself.
The 30 seconds is not a minimum you ought to be working up from. It is the right length. Long enough to interrupt, short enough that you will actually do it standing in a corridor.
The stone doesn't do anything magical. What it does is give your nervous system a physical anchor for an intention you've already set. That's enough. That's actually everything.
Anchor is the word to stay with, because it explains why the object matters at all when the intention is the real content.
An intention held only in your head is competing with everything else in your head, and it loses, because your head is busy and the intention is new. An intention with something cold and heavy attached to it is far easier to find again. You put your hand in your pocket and the whole thing comes back.
It is also why it works better when it is the same stone every time. In the first week it is a stone. By the second week it is a stone that means one particular thing to you, and reaching for it is quicker than remembering.
Here is how it goes into an ordinary week, which is the part no chart ever covers.
In a pocket, not on a shelf. A stone on a shelf is an ornament. A stone in a coat pocket is in the meeting with you.
Before the hard thing rather than after it. 30 seconds in the car before you go in. Afterwards is still worth doing, it is just repair instead of preparation.
At the small moments rather than the big ones. The school run, the inbox, the 10 minutes before everybody gets home. Big moments are rare, and nobody ever built a habit on something rare.
And then let it be boring. Nothing is supposed to happen while you are holding it. You are not waiting for warmth or a tingle or a sign. You are taking 30 seconds and a decision about what you are walking into, which is quite a lot for 30 seconds.
What people try first is reading. A chart, a list of 40 stones and what each one is said to govern, usually saved in a note on the phone.
The reading is not wrong, it is in the wrong order. It puts you in the position of selecting the correct tool for a diagnosis you have made about yourself, which is a great deal of thinking to get through before you have had any experience to think about.
The second thing people try is a lot of stones at once. A set, a kit, a bowl of them by the bed. A bowl of stones is lovely and does nothing, because not one of them ever becomes the one.
The third thing is waiting until you believe in it. Which is much the most reasonable of the 3 and the one that stops people entirely. You do not have to believe anything for a cold object in your hand to interrupt a spiral. The interruption is the mechanism, and it is not asking for your agreement.
Start with a single stone. In crystal tradition, Moonstone is the one for trusting your intuition, Clear Quartz for when your mind is doing too much, Rose Quartz for when you've been hard on yourself. The right one is the one you're drawn to. Trust that.
Drawn to is not vague. It means the one you keep picking up, and it is very often not the one you would have chosen on paper. That is worth paying attention to rather than correcting.
Within the tradition those meanings are old, and they are not rules. If your hand goes to Rose Quartz in a week when your head says it ought to be Clear Quartz, go with the hand. The meaning you give it will do more work than the one in the book.
The practical questions come up every time, so here they are. It does not need to be big. A stone the size of a thumbnail in a pocket beats a large one in a drawer. It does not need cleansing on a schedule. Rinse it under the tap when you feel like it and put it on a windowsill if you want to. If it gets lost, it got lost, and the intention was never in the stone.
And it does not have to be a crystal at all. A pebble off a beach will do this exactly as well, which I say to about half the people who ask. If a smooth grey stone from a river is what you have, that is what you use.
What to notice, after a few weeks, is whether you reach for it without deciding to. That is the whole of it. When the hand goes to the pocket before the thought arrives, the anchor is set.
Then, and only then, a second stone is worth having, for a second thing.
